A collection of one: a Hümmel figurine

A collection of one? How can one be a collection? In the end I came up with this:

What? A Hümmel figurine, these are collectibles, so I think one is a collection, especially when you are sure that this will be the only one forever.

How many? There is only this one Hümmel figurine, I have a few Goebel collectibles though.

When? I inherited this one from my parents in 2003, but it was there even before I was born.
Why? I think Harry Potter would call this a portkey. When I pick up this little statue I am back in Rotterdam, 1964-1965. I was terrified of dogs, especially the boxer of my neighbor, who was always behind me on the couch, when we visited her. That neighbor could not understand me at all. Why being afraid of a dog that doesn't harm anybody? But I was small and that dog was huge! And did that dog know that he was suppose to harm nobody?
First and Last: My mother had a few of these Hümmel figurines, but this one appealed so much to me! I could watch this forever. Just feeling like that little guy who was afraid of dogs too. I had to have this one, my brother took the others. I have often thought of giving this to him, but I just cannot. If I pick it up...my memories start with the warm feeling of being save with my parents...
Is this kitsch or beautiful? It really doesn't matter.
And now what? I have this out of sight in a closed cupboard. I am affraid that people want to give me more of these. I just like this one.
Anything else?

After I inherited this figurine I examined it closely again and suddenly I saw that this was mended. When you look closely, you'll see that the right branch was glued back on. I cannot remember, but this must have been my fault...

Wat? Een Hümmel beeldje, tsja een verzameling van 1? Het moest wel iets worden dat 'verzamelwaardig' was en waarvan ik zeker wist dat de 'verzameling' zich nooit zou uitbreiden.
Hoeveel? Nou ja, 1 dus! Ik heb nog wel wat van de firma Goebel, de fabrikant van deze beeldjes.

Waarom: Dit is wat Harry Potter een portkey (ik weet de Nederlandse term niet, jullie?) zou noemen. Als ik dit beeldje oppak ben ik direct terug in Rotterdam 1964-1965. Ik ben een peuter en als de dood voor honden, vooral voor de boxer van mijn buurvrouw, die altijd achter mij op de bank moet liggen. Mijn buurvrouw snapt niets van mij. Waarom zou iemand bang zijn voor een hond die niemand kwaad doet? Maar ik ben klein en die hond is giga. En weet die hond ook dat hij nix doet?
Eerste en laatste: Mijn moeder had meer van dit soort beeldjes, maar ik wilde alleen deze. Ik heb in mijn gevoel als peuter uren naar dit beeldje gekeken (er was nog nauwelijks iets op tv en wij woonden boven). Ik kon me natuurlijk precies voorstellen hoe bang dat jongetje moest zijn.
En nu? Ik hoef er niet meer. Deze is de enige die me direct dat veilige en warme gevoel van thuis geeft. Mooi? Lelijk? Dat doet er helemaal niet toe. Maar voor de zekerheid staat-ie uit het zicht, voordat iemand denkt dat ik graag meer van die beeldjes cadeau krijg.
Anders nog iets? Toen ik dit beeldje erfde heb ik het nog weer eens heel goed bekeken en ontdekte ik ineens dat het gerepareerd was. De rechtertak is aangelijmd. Ohoh mijn schuld natuurlijk, al herinner ik me er niets meer van!

Ik ben natuurlijk benieuwd of jij ook een verzameling van 1 hebt! Groetjes LiLi M.

The omnivore collector

Now it is time to reveal my 'project': It is all about collecting. Mmm where do I start?

Tijd om mijn project te onthullen: het gaat over verzamelen. Mmm waar te beginnen? Ik zet de rest van de Nederlandse vertaling onderaan deze post.

When I started this blog, one of the things I wanted to do is showing my collections. And I did! I have the feeling that there is no challenge or show and tell that I cannot face. This autumn I thought I had about enough collections in my house and started collections of photographs. I showed you a part of my door knocker photo collection and I told you that I also had a collection of photos of numbers on houses and a collection of photos of letter slots.

Next I thought it would be fun to show you the home numbers, so that you could use those photo's in your craft work. Let's say a calender...but to show you 31 numbers quite clear in one post wouldn't be a good idea...and to put them in a mosaic...mmm I don't think it is easy to use the photos for a craft project when they are in a mosaic. In the mean time I discovered Lisa Congdon's blog 'A collection a day'. Lisa photographs or draws one of her collections each day of 2010:

Like this^. This is my photo, but this is how it works, though I think Lisa's collections start at about 5.

Now to put one and one together: I am planning to make a blogpost every day in March which will contain a house number and a photo of one of my collections, the collection will have as many items as the house number. We start with: Number 1 at March 1st and a collection of one item. I will end at March 31st with a collection of 31 items. I will try to show you collections that you haven't seen yet on my blog.

Lisa Congdon's blog is almost without text, apart from the name of the items shown, which is interesting, but just not me.

My blogposts will look like this:

a house number:


a corresponding number of items; together they are a collection:



And every day the same questions, but obviously different answers:

What? Cannisters filled with sewing supplies.
How many? I have these 4 different ones, but a lot of nr. ones (counting from left to right) in different colors.
Why? I just love anything mini, that is of good quality, these are quite handy! I inherited nr. 4 from my mother. Number 2 and 3 are presents from my bff Mrs. H. And I bought a lot of nr. ones twice in Belgium.
First: Inherited the silver nr. four in March 2003.
Last: bought some pink plastic number 1's last Summer.
Now what? I would love to have more of these, they hardly take any place (they are about 2"). I'll try to trade or sell the plastic ones.
Anything else? Yes:

The wooden bobbins in nr. 2 are only half an inch.

What is the reason for these blogposts ? It is just for fun. As my kind of collecting is just for fun too. I will try to squeeze some regular posts in between. About once or twice a week. I do hope you will like to see what collecting means to me. I hope too that it inspires you to comment and to take a closer look at your collections.

Hallo weer, ik heb een projectje gemaakt van mijn verzamelingen. Toen ik aan mijn blog begon leek het me al leuk om mijn verzamelingen te laten zien, dat schreef ik al in mijn eerste post. En dat heb ik ook gedaan! Ik heb het gevoel dat er geen 'laat me je ...verzameling zien' in blogland is waar ik niet aan mee kan doen. Dit najaar ben ik ook met foto verzamelingen begonnen. Ik liet jullie al een aantal van mijn deurklopper foto's zien. Nu wilde ik verder gaan met de huisnummer foto's. Inmiddels ontdekte ik de blog van Lisa Congdon, a collection a day. Die blog inspireerde mij. Nu leek het mij leuk om gedurende de maand maart elke dag een verzameling te laten zien. Wel wil ik hier mijn eigen draai aan geven: Iedere dag een huisnummer, het nummer van de datum en dan een verzameling, bestaande uit zoveel items als de datum. De blog van Lisa heeft geen tekst, maar dat is nix voor mij. Ik zal iedere dag dezelfde vragen beantwoorden, een voorbeeld:

Wat? Kokertjes met naaibenodigdheden.

Hoeveel? Ik heb deze 4 verschillende, maar de van eerste (van links naar rechts) een aantal in verschillende kleuren.

Waarom? Ik hou van 'mini's, zeker als ze nog bruikbaar zijn ook. Ik erfde nr. 4, nummer 2 en 3 heb ik cadeau gekregen van mijn bff Mrs. H.

Eerste? De zilveren nummer 4 van mijn ouders geërfd in 2003.

Laatste? Een aantal plastic roze nummer 1's heb ik afgelopen zomer gekocht.

En nu? Ik zou deze verzameling nog best willen uitbreiden, de kokertjes nemen vrijwel geen plaats in (ze zijn ongeveer 5 cm. groot) en handig. De plastic kokertjes wil ik ruilen of verkopen.
Anders nog iets? Als je naar de bovenstaande foto's kijkt zie je ook nog de inhoud van de kokertjes en de piepkleine houten klosjes (1 cm!).

Waarom deze blogposten? Gewoon voor de lol! Omdat ik het verzamelen niet kan laten! Ik zal proberen 1 à 2 keer in de week nog een reguliere post eruit te persen. Misschien kan iemand de nummers 1 tot en met 31 gebruiken voor een kalender. Ik hoop dat mijn 'verzamelingen' jullie inspireren en reacties oproepen, misschien dat je je eigen verzameling(en) met andere ogen gaat bekijken.

Spring break!

En dan is het ineens voorjaarsvakantie en laat ik daar nou eens heerlijk van genieten! Iedereen vrij hier, dus we doen vooral leuke dingen. Lekker lezen...ik heb inmiddels al een verzameling Alice boeken (dankzij de Mad hatters tea parties) die nu bij de Alice tag book swap georganiseerd door Karla ook goed van pas komen. Just a short post to tell you that I am enjoying a little Spring break. The children don't have school this week and hubby is off too, so we are just relaxing and doing the things we want to.

Verder ben ik druk aan het fotograferen (jammer van het weer) voor een nieuw blog project waar ik 1 maar van start mee zal gaan. Aanstaand weekend zal ik er meer over vertellen.

Spring break!

En dan is het ineens voorjaarsvakantie en laat ik daar nou eens heerlijk van genieten! Iedereen vrij hier, dus we doen vooral leuke dingen. Lekker lezen...ik heb inmiddels al een verzameling Alice boeken (dankzij de Mad hatters tea parties) die nu bij de Alice tag book swap georganiseerd door Karla ook goed van pas komen. Just a short post to tell you that I am enjoying a little Spring break. The children don't have school this week and hubby is off too, so we are just relaxing and doing the things we want to.

One World One Heart winner!

Vandaag eindigde One World One heart alweer. Dit jaar was het nog groter dan vorig jaar, dank aan Lisa Swifka die het allemaal weer perfect organiseerde, wat inmiddels een onmenselijke klus moet zijn. Ik schreef in mijn eerste OWOH post dat dit boekje nog niet klaar was. Inmiddels zijn alle bladzijdes bewerkt en is van de oorspronkelijke tekst niets meer te lezen.

Time flies when you are having fun! Today 'One world one heart' ended. Lisa Swifka has done another great job this year, thanks so much Lisa. When I started with my book, only the cover was finished, but now there is no page of original text left, only a few drawings.


Omdat het boekje op roze papier gedrukt was, vond ik het uitermate geschikt voor het hart thema.
As the book was printed on pink paper I thought it was perfect to alter it with a heart theme.


Sommige tekeningen heb ik gewoon zo gelaten.
Some of the original drawings were untouched.


Maar de meeste bladzijdes zijn beplakt of aan elkaar genaaid, zodat ze als mapje kunnen dienen.
Other pages were totally covered or sewn together to be used as a pocket.


Ik heb wat ruimte overgelaten om je gedachten te noteren of gewoon je boodschappenlijstje. Wie zal dit boekje verder invullen?

The expiration date of the Frohne Schnittzeichner

Some people have a tough time in the beginning of the year, in the middle of winter, but I always start the year decluttering. Never a dull moment at LiLi's. I know that I am not the only one of course, this lady is letting things go too and she introduced me to the expiration date on stuff. Now I wonder about this:

Ik verveel me nou werkelijk nooit. Altijd valt er wel wat op te ruimen. Soms vind ik dat heel lastig. En daar ben ik niet de enige in. Deze dame is een aantal hulpmiddelen aan het aanreiken waaronder de uiterste houdbaarheidsdatum. Ik vond deze doos met de Frohne Schnittzeichner bij mijn vader. Ik ben er heel zeker van dat dit ooit aan mijn oma behoorde. 'Jouw moeder had ALLES', kon mijn moeder op misprijzende toon tegen mijn vader zeggen. Mijn oma bewaarde namelijk alles. Papieren zakjes, stukjes touw, allerlei tijdschriften...
When my father died I found this tattered box 'Frohne Schnittzeichner in a closet. I'm quite sure that it was my grandmothers' once. 'Your mother had EVERYTHING', my mother use to say to my father. And let me tell you that this wasn't meant as something to be proud of. My grandmother used to save everything, like paper bags and ropes and magazines. She was a crafter too.


Dit zit in de doos: een paar boekjes en een soort Sketch-o-graph. De eigenlijke naam voor het instrument is een pantograaf en er is zelfs een goed Nederlands woord voor: een tekenaap. De tekenaap kopieert en vergroot of verkleint.
This is inside the box: an instrument, that reminds me of the Sketch-o-graph (do you remember that one?) and some booklets. In fact it is a pantograph (which is actually the original name of the Sketch-0-graph), an instrument to copy and enlarge a drawing, invented in the 17th century, according to Wikipedia.


Eén boekje is voorzien van tekeningen van kledingmodellen. De nummers van de modellen corresponderen met piepkleine patroon tekeningen in een ander boekje. Als je nu de tekenaap goed weet te gebruiken heb je hier een hele lading patronen. Maar eigenlijk weet ik zeker dat mijn oma dit nooit gebruikt heeft...omdat het namelijk gewoon niet werkt.
One booklet is filled with clothing, all numbered. The numbers refer to patterns in another booklet. Here is number 4120, the red skirt and the blouse, which pattern is on the bottom of the left page. There are separate pages of pattern numbers combined with how much fabric is required.
With these booklets and the pantograph my grandmother could sew almost anything in the fifties. But I am quite sure that she never used this.


Dat instrument is weer typisch zoiets dat handig lijkt, maar ik kan er totaal niet mee omgaan. Ik heb het mijn oma, die altijd aan het breien was of figuurzagen of draadfiguren maakte, nooit zien gebruiken.
This is one of those things that seems to be very handy, but in fact it doesn't work at all. I couldn't use the Sketch-o-graph, neither can I use this!
I always saw my grandmother knitting, or making things out of wood or out of wire, but I never saw her using this. Last year I thought, why save it like this? Why don't I use the booklets for crafting?


Valt het jullie trouwens ook op dat het ondergoed zonder model getekend wordt? Jaaa, dit zijn nog de jaren '50!

Afgelopen zomer vond ik op een rommelmarkt nog 2 Frohne patronen boekjes uit de vroege 60er jaren.
Last summer I found these two on a market. Two Frohne pattern magazines from the early 60-ties.


De getekende modellen hebben een heel andere, meer zelfbewuste uitstraling en we zien hier de dames pantalon!!
Nu heb ik dus een instrument dat ik niet kan gebruiken en inmiddels 3 boekjes die ik niet kapot ga knippen.
Natuurlijk weet ik dat ik de boekjes ook kan kopiëren en dan gebruiken, maar ik vroeg me gewoon af: zit er nou geen uiterste houdbaarheidsdatum aan zo'n apparaat met de boekjes?

Now I have an instrument that I will never use and 3 pattern magazines that I won't cut for crafting. Okay, I know that I can make copies and use those. Why cannot I just use it, or sell it?
My grandmother died in 1970, I think a little more than 20 years after she bought this. My father saved it for about 30 years and now I have it for about 7 years. When does the Frohne Schnittzeichner expire?
