Too bad I quit smoking. Mmm, I never thought that these words would ever come out of my mouth, but on this Silver Sunday I would have loved to show you these items:
Deze week voor de zilveren zondag maar eens wat rookartikelen uit de verzameling van mijn moeder tevoorschijn gehaald. Mijn moeder heeft nooit gerookt, ik wel. Nu zou het leuk zijn om de volgende voorwerpen eens te demonstreren, maar helaas, ik ben al een tijdje gestopt. Gewoonlijk vind ik dat erg fijn!

Let's take a closer look to my 'smoking items', which belonged to the collection of my mother, who never smoked!
We zullen alle rookartikelen eens in detail bekijken, te beginnen met deze sigarettendoos, bestemd voor sigaretten zonder filter.
Ik val altijd op ingegraveerde initialen. Je vraagt je altijd af was dit doosje van: Frederik Willem Simons? Of Sijmen Wouter Franken?
First the lovely small cigarette box.
It was made for short cigarettes, the ones without a filter or maybe the ones you'd roll yourself, which is quite common here in the Netherlands for men and women. The engravings are beautiful and I love everything with initials.
De achterkant van het doosje, ook bewerkt hoor, de achterkant mag ook gezien worden, kom daar nu nog eens om!
This is the backside of the cigarette box.
Hier zie je de voorloper van het luciferdoosje, het tondeldoosje. Ook helemaal gegraveerd. Als je goed kijkt zie je een datum; 24 september 1873, ook weer zoiets dat voor mij tot de verbeelding spreekt.
This is one of my favorite items of my mothers' collections;
the predecessor of the matchbox, google translator says the English word would be a tinderbox, but I am not sure, as the word is out of use, of course. We Dutch would call it a tondeldoos, in fact (yes you are right Barbara); a tondeldoosje (-je always means that the item or person or whatever is small), which is another word that isn't used very often in Dutch conversation.
If you look carefully you see a date engraved: 18 24/5 73 which means September 24th 1873. I just love that.
Nog nooit een zilveren luciferdoosje gezien? Hier zie je een zilveren luciferdoos hoesje, zodat je van je zilveren tondeldoos naadloos over kon schakelen op de zilveren luciferdoos.
Up next is the matchbox holder. I tried to show you what the purpose of this thing is but my match box is too small, well you get an idea.
Als laatste de 2 sigarettenpijpjes. Ik vond dat altijd wel wat hebben met zo'n pijpje roken, ik had destijds ook een hele lange, misschien wel 20 centimeter lang, maar gewoon van de feestwinkel ofzo hoor, geen zilveren. En het roken ermee vond ik niets, jammer ik had zo graag eens op Marlène Dietrich geleken. Nu moet ik er niet meer aandenken om te roken, getver, ik krijg het al benauwd bij het idee. Geen grotere tegenstander van roken dan de ex-roker.
And finally the two cigarette holders. Ah to smoke like Marlene Dietrich did...no really if I think about it I already get a nasty taste in my mouth. Nothing like an ex smoker, I hate smoking, cannot stand it anymore.
