What (not) to crochet?

Januari is natuurlijk de maand voor goede voornemens, maar aangezien ik nog zo goed als nieuwe voornemens van 2008, 2009 en 2010 heb, waag ik me er maar niet meer aan. In 2009 wilde ik gaan haken en kwam ik niet verder dan 10 bloemetjes die ik gebruikte om mijn schoenen op te pimpen. 
In 2009 I wanted to start crochet again, maybe you'll remember that.

All I did was crocheting a few small flowers, which I used for revamping these espadrilles. 

In 2010 I spotted this kit at Kruidvat (a store like Walgreens in the States and Boots in the UK).

Now this toadstool kit for kids would be a perfect starter, I thought.

In 2010 kwam ik onderstaande set bij het Kruidvat tegen. Dit leek me leuk en dat zou ik toch zeker ook kunnen?

Maybe a nine year old would see before buying that this was going to be a flat toadstool, a kind of potholder, not a 3d model of a toadstool. Mmm I hated it. Never finish something you hate. I searched the internet and found a 3d model of a toadstool here.

Dat viel nog tegen; in plaats van een mooie 3d paddestoel bleek het hier om een platte soort pannenlap te gaan. Jammer maar niet getreurd. Op het internet vond ik hier het patroon dat ik zocht. 

While crocheting according the pattern I discovered that there were 3 ways of putting your hook in the crochet work and that you have to count well. ^ This wasn't the toadstool of my dreams either.
Al hakende kwam ik erachter dat je wel op 3 verschillende manieren je haaknaald in je werk kunt steken. En dat je goed moet tellen. Mijn eerste poging leidde dan ook tot niets. 

After crocheting according to the pattern I finished up with this and 'kaboutertje Weltevreden' (his name means satisfied little gnome) a vintage find of Spring 2010 is happy too. 

Maar toen ik me nauwkeurig aan de beschrijving hield, eindigde ik dan toch naar tevredenheid, niet in de laatste plaats tot tevredenheid van 'kaboutertje Weltevree, een vintage vondst op de markt van Rotterdam in de zomer van 2010.

Nu kon ik me wel aan een groter project wagen.

Wat te kiezen? Nog niet zo lang geleden vond ik een jaargang Ariadnes uit 1973 met begerenswaardige haakmodelletjes:

Wie koopt er nog extensions als je ze zelf kunt haken? (Alleen krullenpatroon). 

In the end I decided to make a blanket. A ripple afghan. 

Uiteindelijk besloot ik een deken, een zogenoemde 'ripple afghan' te maken. 

^ This is my sample, to see whether I could do it. From toadstool to blanket in one step might have been too optimistic, so this is going to be a cushion. I love this pattern. Working in stripes is very addictive.

Ik ben met een proef begonnen, omdat ik het nogal optimistisch vond om van paddestoel meteen naar deken te gaan. Dit ^ wordt een kussen. Ik vind het zo leuk om te doen, die strepen, heerlijk, verslavend.

Though I understood that something like this^ is quite normal in Belgium. If you are looking for a pattern like this, just ask her. It is kind of cool actually.

Hoewel ik begrepen heb dat zo'n muts in België heel gebruikelijk is. Als je zo'n soort patroon zoekt kun je het gewoon aan haar vragen. (Het is eigenlijk wel een chill modelletje hoor).
