At a few blogging friends I noticed some Silver Sunday posts. Great! I love silver. Beth is hosting Silver Sunday again today and I decided to join the fun. Actually I don't have any silver, but my mother collected silver utensils and now she isn't here anymore I have inherited some. So this is a tribute to a woman with great taste. Come and see my silver sewing tools for starters:
Mijn moeder had al haar zilver altijd keurig uitgestald liggen in enkele kasten. Hier ligt het wat achtelozer.
My mother used to have her collection in a few cupboards beautifully arranged, but my kind of style is a little more natural. This childrens' sewing basket is filled to the brim and some silver utensils are crammed in between yarn and other stuff.
En ook poets ik het zilver niet. Ik vind die verweerde look juist zo mooi, die blauwige en rozige tinten komen juist zo mooi bij het verschoten fluweel.
My mother used to polish her silver, but I don't. I just love the tarnished look. The combination of the tattered blue velvet is better with the silver blues and pinks than the polished silver, in my opinion. And one other advantage: no polishing saves a lot of energy and time! Sorry Mom! But at least this one isn't hiding in the sewing basket...
Ik heb twee schaartjes, de linker is zilver en de andere is alleen maar mooi bewerkt, al komt dat niet over op de foto :-(
These two scissors are in that basket, the left one is silver but the right one isn't. Too bad it's lovely decorations won't show well at the photo.
Dit is overduidelijk een setje; een priem en een naaldenkoker (r).
These two obvious belong together, I love that.
The one on the right is a needle case, the one on the left is a piercer.
I think not polishing them is good for these two too.

Je kunt de dop eraf schroeven en dat blijkt dan ineens een vingerhoed te zijn, ook komt er dan een spoel met verschillende kleuren draad tevoorschijn.
You can screw this tool open: the top turns into a thimble and there is a little thing with yarn around it inside.
Die spoel kun je dan ook weer open schroeven en dan blijkt er een piepklein schaartje in de dop te zitten, ik ben dol op dit soort minidingen. Ook zitten er nog wat naalden in de spoel, die dus eigenlijk een koker blijkt te zijn. Zo heb je echt alles bij de hand!
That top of that thing can be screwed off too: Look there are very small scissors inside, that is the best part and some needles can be stored here as well. Who needs more to sew? This tool is only about 2"!
Bij naaibenodigdheden mogen natuurlijk ook de vingerhoeden niet ontbreken...
Did I mention thimble? Here another ten silver ones. Do click on the photo to see some more details. Why some of them have a whole bunch of stamps and others only one? My mother could have told you, but I don't. Another reason for missing her, but I want to thank her anyhow for leaving me so much love, beautiful memories and a lot of beautiful things too.
Of course the most important are always love and the memories. Without these things are only things. How you were raised and how you felt makes how you feel today.
That is why we all can miss some of our earthly possessions without easily.

Jammer dat mijn moeder ons niet meer kan vertellen waarom de ene vingerhoed nu vol staat met stempels terwijl er bij de andere met moeite eentje te ontdekken valt. Zulke verzamelingen vervullen mij met weemoed, maar ook met dankbaarheid, omdat ik het ook leuk vind dat ouders zulke mooie dingen verzamelden. Het belangrijkst zijn de herinneringen die eraan vast zitten, mooi terugkijken dat is heel wat waard. Zonder die herinneringen zijn het maar gewoon wat spullen toch? Daarom kunnen wij eigenlijk heel goed wat missen van onze rijkdom. Het zou goed zijn, denk ik, om vandaag iets van onze rijkdom af te staan aan de hulpverlening op Haïti.
Nederlandse lezers kunnen dat heel gemakkelijk hier doen.
