Vandaag 11 devotie medailles en jullie zullen het weer met mij moeten doen in plaats van met Tess!
Deze medailles werden gebruikelijk op de linkerkant van je hemd of borstrok gespeld.
Mijn oma had destijds voor ons borstokken gebreid, gebreide hempjes dus. Ik denk dat ik nu wel toe kan geven dat ik ze heerlijk vond, warm en zacht. Mijn oudere broer weigerde echter ze te dragen en toen vond ik het dus ook niet meer stoer. Exit borstrok.

My grandmother used to knit these kind of singlets. I think it is safe to say now that I kind of liked them, warm and soft. But my brother refused to wear them, so I pretended that I didn't like them either. So we wore the devotional medal pinned to our underwear on the left (heart!) side. It was there to protect us and we always had a Mary medal. When I stayed at my cousin I was surprised to discover that she didn't wore one medal:
Wij droegen altijd een Maria medaille. Natuurlijk was zo'n medaille ter bescherming bedoeld. Toen ik eens bij mijn nichtje logeerde ontdekte ik dat zij niet 1 maar wel een dozijn heiligen opgespeld had, wij waren altijd een beetje bang dat zij er krom van ging lopen, maar waarschijnlijk zorgden al die heiligen ervoor dat dat niet het geval was!
She had a whole bunch of saints to protect her, that probably explained why she could still walk straight! I think when the 70-ties arrived we broke with this custom. An acquaintance of my aunt told us that she had sewn several medals in the costume of her employer, who we all knew was a bad man, to guide him into the right direction.
Tegenwoordig koop ik de medailles in België en gebruik ze bij het inpakken of om te ruilen.
Nowadays I use them in swaps or to wrap a present like this^. I always buy the medals in Belgium and I keep about 15 'in stock' that I keep in a small glass jar.
